When I first saw Amelia she was blending in with the rest of the local market scene. One could easily see she was homeless and her everyday life was a struggle. The first time I made eye contact, she asked me for money. I didn’t have any on me, only my camera and my phone.

I showed her my empty pockets. She laughed, so I started laughing. There was something so warm and kind about her. The more I smiled the more she giggled. She then pointed at my camera and started posing in front of me, so I started taking pictures.

Her reaction when I showed her the images was one of the most rewarding moments. She absolutely loved it. She walked next to me for a while as I carried on exploring market life.

Meeting Amelia reminded me to love the life I live, and love those that can smile, even when they’re in trouble.
