"Jeep Tracks And Nikon Clicks: LensTraveller’s Notebook From Durban To Cape Town"
DAY ONE: Durban-Clarens
As the first ray of the sun began to rise, I felt the excitement flowing through my veins while packing the last bags into my Jeep Rubicon. The open road awaited me, the road trip to the legendary city of Cape Town that I had wanted to do for a long time. With my Nikon cameras secured on the passenger seat and a playlist of road trip anthems ready to go, I set off from Durban, eager to embrace the adventure ahead.
The Scenic Route
Just off the N3, through the enchanting rolling hills of the Midlands, I found myself at the Gardens at Brahman Hills for a delightful breakfast. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods at the “Windmills” filled the air, and I couldn’t resist the temptation of a toasted cheese sandwich paired with a large black coffee.
As I sat on the terrace, surrounded by lush gardens, I took a moment to soak in the tranquillity of the place. The majestic gardens are still relatively new as they were created in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown when the staff were unable to serve guests or do their usual work—a beautiful symbol of resilience and have earned recognition as a Royal Horticultural Society Partner Garden [ read more about the gardens here].
With my full belly and spirit lifted, I hit the road again, heading towards the epic Border Post. The drive was nothing short of spectacular, with rolling hills and vibrant green landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. I made a few stops along the way to capture the beauty of the scenery, my camera clicking away as I documented the journey.
My music playlist played as I navigated the gentle curves of the highway and reached the charming small town of Winterton on the R74. I didn’t linger long; the road called me forward, its promise of new landscapes too tempting to resist.
As I approached the border post marking my entry into the Free State, the landscape began to change. The Jeep’s sturdy suspension adjusted smoothly to the shifting terrain, and I felt thankful for its comfort as I arrived at the border post.
Through the Golden Gate National Park
Crossing into the Free State, the landscape shifted once again, and the golden-hued cliffs of Golden Gate Highlands National Park came into view. The sight was dazzling—sandstone formations kissed by the sun, their fiery colours blending seamlessly with the dramatic mountain backdrop.
I took my time snapping photos and enjoying the fresh mountain air. Despite being the Christmas holiday season, the park was surprisingly quiet, allowing me to reflect on how important it is to take these moments for ourselves.
Clarens
After a day of exploration and adventure, I finally arrived in Clarens, a quaint little town in the Free State. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over the town. I checked into my comfy accommodation, eager to unwind after a long day on the road before exploring the town!
Clarens is known for its vibrant art scene, and I couldn’t resist taking a stroll through its charming streets, full of galleries, quirky art, boutiques and inviting cafes. The town feels like a poetic pause amidst life’s chaos—a canvas painted with hues of tranquillity and charm. Known as the “Jewel of the Eastern Free State,” this retro town is home to many artists, adventurers, and dreamers alike. For the wanderer, the streets are a delightful maze of discovery around each corner.
But Clarens isn’t just for the quiet moments; it calls to the wild and nature lovers too. Its proximity to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park offers endless opportunities to hike, bike, or simply admire the fiery rock formations that light up at sunset. And for those with a thirst for adventure, the Ash River provides some of the best white-water rafting in the country.
As a travel writer and photographer, Clarens is a muse. Its light plays tricks with the lens, shifting between soft pastels at dawn and bold oranges as the day ends. Its people, warm and welcoming, have stories as rich as the land itself. Whether you’re here for the solitude or the scenery, Clarens feels like a place where the spirit of exploration finds its home.
I wandered into a local knife shop in Clarens, named “Bossie Knives”, a treasure collection for enthusiasts of craftsmanship and tradition. Inside, the scent of oiled wood and metal filled the air, hinting at the dedication poured into every blade. I was greeted warmly by Yolande, one of the owners and artisans, a woman whose passion for her craft was evident in the way she spoke and moved through the workshop.
With a spark of enthusiasm, Yolande offered me a tour of their workshop, an intimate space where raw materials transformed into functional art. Step by step, she walked me through the intricate process of knife-making, explaining the careful selection of steel, the forging and tempering techniques, and the precision required to shape and hone the blades. Each stage was a dance of skill and patience, from crafting ergonomic handles to ensuring a perfect edge.
Yolande’s hands, both delicate and strong, moved with practised ease as she demonstrated techniques passed down through generations. Every detail told a story—of heritage, innovation, and a deep respect for the art of craftsmanship.
By the end of the tour, I was captivated, not just by the beauty of the knives but by the passion and artistry behind them. Each knife is an exquisitely crafted piece—more than a tool, they are a work of art, infused with the spirit of its maker and the essence of Clarens.
As I left the shop, I was reminded of why I love travelling—moments like this are a testament to the beauty of uncovering stories hidden in unexpected places. These experiences enrich my journey, turning simple encounters into cherished memories and connections that linger long after the road is behind me.
As night fell, I found a lovely restaurant where I enjoyed a delicious dinner, savouring the flavours of the region. I reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for my experiences and the beauty I had witnessed.
Looking Ahead
As I lay in bed that night, I couldn’t help but feel excited for the days to come. The road trip from Durban to Cape Town was just beginning, and I knew many more adventures were waiting for me. With my cameras ready and my heart open, I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of the stunning landscapes and vibrant cultures that lay ahead.
Day two of my road trip began with a fresh sense of adventure. As I left the charming town of Clarens, I stumbled upon a gem—Voetstoots Antiques & Music Shop & Live Music Venue. The eclectic mix of nostalgia and artistry here was nothing short of mesmerizing.
Outside the shop, I was greeted by a rugged Willys Jeep grill mounted on the wall—a perfect tribute to the spirit of exploration. For Jeep enthusiasts, the name “Willys” carries historical significance. It dates back to World War II when the Willys-Overland company was one of the firms tasked with producing the iconic U.S. Army vehicle that became known as the Jeep. This heritage is a testament to resilience, adaptability, and the timeless spirit of adventure—a legacy that continues to inspire Jeep owners today.
Inside, the treasures continued to unfold. Among their collection was a stack of Sarie magazines, a fascinating contrast between the modern 2008 edition and a vintage copy from 1954. Paging through the older edition, I couldn’t help but feel transported to another time when stories were told differently, yet the essence of life’s joys remained timeless.
The shop was a haven of history, with every corner revealing another slice of the past—be it a rare vinyl record, a rustic piece of furniture, or a quirky collectable.
Voetstoots isn’t just a stop along the road; it’s a celebration of the past and a reminder that there’s beauty in looking back even as we travel forward. Jeep’s rugged spirit fits perfectly with places like this—offering a vehicle that connects us with destinations that have their own stories to tell.
Whether you’re a Jeep owner seeking new trails or an old soul drawn to antiques, this little spot is a must-visit. Let the open road guide you, and who knows what treasures you might discover along the way?
